Bookmaking: Europe

The status of bookmaking in Europe tends to waver up and down. Bookmaking is somewhat of a controversial occupation most anywhere you look, so the fact that there is conflict both in the past and present about bookmaking in Europe is not a huge surprise. People across Europe, though, may participate in the practice as sports betting is a hugely popular phenomenon in Europe.

The Legalities

The history of bookmaking in Europe is somewhat amusing, especially in the United Kingdom. Here, the practice has been both legal and illegal –but it has also been both at the same time! In past years licenses were required for people who wished to play or to make the books. However, debts arising from gambling could not be enforced to be paid. So in effect, although people were required legally to have a license, the fact that people were not punished for incurring debt during gambling somewhat swayed that process.

Today European citizens can enjoy using a bookie to place their bets on sporting events as well as other bet-worthy events. Betting on political elections, for example, is a pretty popular pastime in Europe and in particular the United Kingdom. Citizens can enjoy placing their wagers on basically any sport or event they would like. Doing so enables the process of bookmaking to thrive.

Citizens of the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe can place their bets through bookies in person. These bookies are often found at the races, which are also popular events to place a wager on. But bookies can also be found online, as well. In this way people from Europe and beyond can bet on certain events with the same bookie. This can be an exciting way to try to earn some money –whether you are betting with or against everyone else.

The type of betting most popular in Europe is also influenced by the popularity of certain events in the region. Sports betting is obviously one of the most popular subjects to bet on across the globe. In Europe, for example, soccer (also called football) is by far more popular than it is in America. Soccer, along with other sports, comprises the majority of sports betting in terms of European bookmaking.
