Bookmaking: The Races

Horse racing is one of the most popular sports to bet on for bookmakers. Bookies can make quite a large profit off the horse racing industry. While other types of races like greyhound racing remain popular for bettors, horse racing still sparks interest in bettors across the world and in particular in the United States, where several important racing stakes are held each year.

Profitable Races

Part of the reason why horse racing is so popular for bookies is that they can make a large profit from balancing the wagers they book for the different races. Horse racing in general has always been a source for placing bets, and placing a bet through the bookies commonly located at the track has been a pastime for many people hitting the tracks on race day.

Horse racing is a profitable enterprise for a few reasons. First, the outcome of the races can never truly be predicted, so although some people may place their bets on a horse that has won consistently, the underdog in the race always has a chance to win. While it is true that the horses who perform consistently and win the races have a better chance at being successful, it is the uncertainty of horse racing that can make it so profitable. The underdog horse always has a chance to come from behind and win, which draws the attention of many people to the races. The movie Seabiscuit is a good example of how profoundly one underdog horse can affect the bets and wagers placed –as well as the people themselves.

Horse racing took a dip in the early 20th century after gambling and betting were for the most part banned. But the sport experienced a comeback in the middle of the 20th century and after the 1970s as horses like Affirmed and Seattle Slew made betting on the races popular again. Although bookmaking is illegal in most states aside from Nevada, people can still go online or to another source to place their bets on the races –and they certainly do. As horses continue to make an impact on the public, horse betting will continue to be a profitable enterprise for bookies.
